Sometimes the only daily communication I get from my very busy husband (he’s the chair o of the English Department at Wichita State University)  is his WORDLE score sent to our group chat of dedicated WORDLE players which includes me, Fran, my daughter annalivia, and my older sister Heather).

I’m competitive so I love when I “beat” him, but he always reminds me, “It’s not a competition.” Sure. Ok. Ha ha.

I’ve been thinking of writing short short stories based on my WORDLE boards. I’ve also thought about all the 5 letter words I could use to describe myself. It’s a fun and creative exercise.

LEVEL 50!

So I just updated my bio this weekend!

“Leah is an extremely active Pokémon Go player who achieved Level 40 status on December 21, 2017 and Level 50 on January 27, 2023.”

Yes, I really do love this game and my dedication hasn’t wavered since Day 1 (July 11, 2016). In fact, it’s only grown in intensity to fill voids and to keep me active with pleasant surprises and a sense of accomplishment. During a particularly challenging time from 2020-2022 it was literally a lifeline.

My husband jokes we’d get divorced if this app were to be discontinued. That’s a testament to just how much we both enjoy playing and sharing the game together.

My attraction to Pokémon Go is also indicative of what type of person I am.
  • Motivated by goals and completing tasks
  • Enjoys walking and running
  • Appreciates learning about important monuments, historic plaques, museums, and architecture
  • Loves exploring nature and new neighborhoods
  • Thrives in competitive environments
  • Researches options thoroughly and digs into the data to optimize results

The degree to which I’ve upped my game (pun intended) demonstrates my ability to manage multiple challenges (I’ve got 15 trainer accounts), stay focused, and meet deadlines. Who wouldn’t want to friend or to hire someone like that?  :)

A Difference

“You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.” —Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, UN Messenger of Peace, Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute

I'm very proud of the social media and email template work I produced for the 2022 season of the Virginia Film Festival. My thorough review of everything that came before me helped inspire me to try new things and get creative! It was my goal to have a constant and engaging presence across all social channels and I achieved that. Thank you to the entire team for giving me this opportunity to have fun and, more importantly, to make a difference in a positive and thoughtful way.

I just had a great conversation with a friend about the ups and downs of my job search since my decision to leave a company where I spent 22 years of my life.

They suggested looking for videos or books about women making career changes after 50 and I’ve already found some great resources!

Justice

 seeA couple weeks ago I spoke to a counselor about a recent experience I had and how it reminded me of another incident from my past in which I felt the need to take a stand, to speak up. She reflected that I seemed to be a person who was driven by JUSTICE. I never really thought about myself in that way until she said that, but it seems to fit. I’m always trying to learn, to grow, and to make things better for others. I feel the most unease when I see others struggling, especially if they don’t have the skills or the courage to speak about their experiences. It’s risky to be vulnerable and honest, but it’s too uncomfortable for me not to be authentic and transparent.

I found myself in a situation where I had a lot of conflicting emotions and difficulty processing what had happened. I reached out to many resources including the Women’s Initiative, an employee assistance program, and an Ombuds. Each conversation helped me in a different way, but the Ombuds really shifted my perspective the most because she was focused on finding a way for me to get resolution and closure, even if it was me setting a deadline to move on. I received an evaluation form about my experience and this is what I. wrote:
“I am so grateful I found this resource. My call was amazingly helpful. I felt heard. I felt cared about. It was so refreshing to finally have someone take the time to listen, to offer options for resolution, and to tell me to give myself a deadline to move on even if I can't get the outcome I might desire. I am really happy I reached out to this office and I am already feeling better because I was able to articulate the issue and also speak about what closure could look like. Just talking about options and what I might need or want helped me learn more about myself and grow from a very painful experience. Thank you so much.”

The Serenity Prayer and 16 Variations

by Jeremy E. Sherman Ph.D., MPP

Grant me the honesty to say what will prove to have been helpful, the tact to not say what will prove to have been unhelpful and the wisdom to know the difference.

Grant me regret when there are lessons to learn that will prove helpful with future choices,
no regrets when there are no lessons to learn and the wisdom to know the difference.

Grant me the doubt that motivates a search for more wisdom when the path is unclear, the confidence to stop searching when the path is clear and the wisdom to know the difference.

Accept The Things You Cannot Change, Or Change The Things You Cannot Accept?

1. Don’t be fooled: You can’t control everything.
2. But don’t be fooled: You can influence more than you think.

If you work at UVA and have an issue, I strongly recommend contacting the Ombuds.

I had intended to run the 10th Rivanna Greenbelt Marathon and let my twin, the newest co-Race Director, to handle all race issues on Sunday, but life had other plans! Flooding from a broken fridge and a really bad virus sidelined me from running, but I had so much fun on the sidelines of another successful race.

I’ll write more about what all this has meant to me, but it’s so heartwarming and humbling. I put everything I have into creating a quirky little race that is so much like who I am and it worked! That personal satisfaction is priceless for this volunteer race director!

Thanks to all the other volunteers who made this race another amazing event!

I'm feeling a lot like I did after the 2013 Boston Marathon. Everything hurts. I can't even process that horrific events have happened in places where I've been that were filled with joy. And I think about all the lives gone and forever changed.

I’m hoping everyone who’s struggling has a friend or loved one to lean on for support.

4. Engaging in intentional or negligent conduct that causes or is likely to cause injury to a client;

8. Violating or aiding and abetting another to violate any statute applicable to the practice of the profession, including § 32.1-127.1:03 of the Code of Virginia relating to health records;

9. Withdraw from, avoid, adjust, or clarify conflicting roles with due regard for the best interest of the affected party and maximal compliance with these standards;

This is the second most meaningful Wordle board after getting DREAM in just one try on Day 4 of The Virginia Film Festival when I was thinking of my temp role at VAFF as the DREAM JOB! 😴 💼 🎥

RIGID is a word used to describe me by a therapist who now has a hearing scheduled in February 2023, two years and 5 months after I filed the complaint. All I wanted was a public record. I got it! ✔️🏅

I’m still trying to process what it means to finally get something I so desperately wanted: VALIDATION. Acknowledgement by an unbiased Board that what happened to me was either negligent or intentionally harmful (or “causing injury”).

It’s hard to believe that I finally received an email about the progress of my complaint after having the first phase of my exit interview with VAFF, when I connected these two events in my last post, I had no idea that this day would come while I was still working at the Festival.

Stay tuned for more about my desire for connections and finding meaning in my work - the writing, the therapy, and the job.

The Work

11/8/2022

0 Comments

When I was an MFA student at GMU I remember a professor once told my class that if he ran into one of us years in the future and asked about our “work”, he’d expect to hear about our writing, not the job we had at the time to pay the bills.

That comment occurred to me this weekend as I was both an employee and attendee of the Virginia Film Festival. An event that, in many ways, was 13 years in the making. In 2009, when I first attended VAFF, ecstatic to meet Alan Ball, asking him sign my “Six Feet Under” book and telling him the show saved my marriage because it gave us something to share together, I could have never imagined I’d end up being a seasonal employee and have the opportunity to meet another screenwriter, Meg LeFauve, who would inspire and encourage me to tell my stories.

Before experiencing the magic of these five days in November, I had endured 100+ interviews and even more rejections from the countless other jobs I applied for but never advanced past the resume slush pile. I survived two years without permanent full-time employment (except for a three month position that ended with getting fired for the first time in over 27 years) and two years without resolution to a complaint I filed with the Virginia Department of Health Professions against a psychologist I saw over 1,000 times. It’ll take time for me to adequately describe how all of these things are intricately connected, but suffice it to say, it’s about facing shame and regret, needing validation, exploring vulnerability, quantifying worth, defining failure or success, seeking approval, wanting  acceptance, and establishing connection. The journey from “I’ll pass” to “We’d like to make an offer.”

This weekend I also recalled the advice from a coach who had said to runners training for a long distance race that the marathon should be a celebration for all the miles it took to get to the starting line. For so many runners it’s the hours on the roads, in solitude or with friends, that brings meaning to the sport, not the actual race. But when you earn the PR you’ve been striving for or finally get to the finish line in a race you’ve been struggling through, the completion of that goal is a feeling of joy and accomplishment that is like no other.

There were so many meaningful and life-changing moments during the festival that as I write this now I don’t even think I’m ready to share all of them just yet. Maybe I can just start with a few of my favorite photos.

I cackled. I cried. I danced. I panicked. I felt awkward. I felt pride. I was alone. I was with friends, new and old. And, most importantly, I shared experiences with my daughter and with my twin.

So I’ve found meaning in all the pain I’ve experienced over the past two years and the memories from this festival are like race medals I’ll cherish forever.
